Whether it’s your first time using a machine or you need a refresher, Learn to Sew: Tote Bag will give you the skills and confidence you need to get started! We will cover basics stitches, classic seams, project construction order, and the tools and materials you will generally need for sewing projects. The course covers the mechanics of a sewing machine, including how to troubleshoot for different fabrics and for other problems that can arise while sewing.
You’ll learn how to accurately measure, pin, press, and join fabrics for a high-quality handcrafted project: the classic tote bag. In this class, we also discuss fabric characteristics and the proper copying and cutting of patterns. Once mastered, these techniques can be used to sew together garments from patterns, create original designs, or explore fabric as a medium for soft sculpture. No previous sewing experience is necessary.
Note: If you haven’t sewn before or want to build up your confidence, you’ll need an introduction class to move on to Textiles West Fascination level classes. We highly recommend completion of this course before enrolling in any other classes at Textiles West.
Note: Textiles West provides sewing machines for you to use in the studio, but some students prefer to learn on their own machine and you are welcome to bring your machine from home. If you do bring your own machine, please remember that it must be in excellent working condition and you will also need to bring the manual, accessories, and power cord/foot pedal.
