Instructor: Julia Bannerot

Class Description: Get down and dirty with the beautiful art of bundle dyeing! In this two hour workshop, you'll gain an understanding of how to work with natural dyes and rust. You'll get an introduction to natural dye plants, mordants, and protein-based and cellulose-based fibers. There will be an overview of natural dyestuffs including harvested plants from Flying Pig Farm (flowers, indigo..), food scraps (onion skins, avocado skins...), dried extracts, iron water (rust), and more. We will cover how to bundle dye on silk and cotton, including how to prepare the fabric, arranging the dyestuffs, rolling and tying the bundles, and steaming the bundles in a turkey roaster. Each student will leave with 2 or more unique dyed pieces, along with a couple smaller samples, and the knowhow to design and create more pieces on your own.

Materials fee: $20 for silk scarves and fabric
